Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how your body processes blood sugar (glucose). Glucose is the main source of energy for your body, but too much in the bloodstream can cause serious health complications.
There are two main types of diabetes:
Type 1 Diabetes – An autoimmune condition where the body does not produce insulin.
Type 2 Diabetes – A condition where the body becomes resistant to insulin or does not produce enough of it.
Gestational Diabetes – A temporary form of diabetes that can develop during pregnancy.
Signs & Symptoms of Diabetes
Diabetes symptoms can develop gradually or appear suddenly. Common signs include:
Increased thirst and frequent urination
Unexplained weight loss
Fatigue and lack of energy
Blurred vision
Slow healing wounds
Tingling or numbness in hands and feet
If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to consult your doctor or pharmacist for advice. If you are concerned about potentially having diabetes or need support managing an existing diabetes condition, speak to your GP for further assessment and guidance.

Understanding Your Test Results
Blood Glucose Test Levels (mmol/L)
Normal: 4.0 – 5.9 mmol/L (before meals), less than 7.8 mmol/L (after meals)
Diabetes: 7.0 mmol/L or higher (fasting) or 11.1 mmol/L or higher (random test)
HbA1c Test Levels (% or mmol/mol)
Normal: Below 5.7% (39 mmol/mol)
Prediabetes: 5.7% – 6.4% (39 – 47 mmol/mol)
Diabetes: 6.5% (48 mmol/mol) or higher
If your test results indicate prediabetes or diabetes, we recommend speaking to your GP for further evaluation and management.
Managing Diabetes
Living with diabetes requires ongoing management, including:
Blood sugar monitoring – Regular testing helps keep blood glucose levels within a healthy range.
Healthy eating – A balanced diet, including low-GI foods, helps maintain steady blood sugar levels.
Physical activity – Regular exercise improves insulin sensitivity and helps with weight management.
Medication – Some people with diabetes require insulin or other prescribed medications to manage their condition.
Some risk factors for developing Type 2 Diabetes include:
Being overweight or obese
Lack of physical activity
Family history of diabetes
High blood pressure or high cholesterol
If you are at risk, lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy diet and exercising regularly can significantly reduce your chances of developing diabetes.
