Let’s talk about Type 2 Diabetes with pharmacist Jane Brennan

Did you know that there are more than 1 million people in Ireland at risk of, or who have diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is where the body either doesn’t produce enough insulin, or is unable to fully use the insulin it produces. This results in too much glucose in the blood, which can have serious long term effects on the body. It can affect the heart, eyes, kidneys and circulation. Being over weight and sedentary increases the risk. Research shows that it can be up to ten years before someone is diagnosed with diabetes. In some cases, patients can go into remission if they loose enough weight soon after diagnosis.

Are you an apple or a pear?

If you carry your weight around your tummy (apple) you are more at risk of developing diabetes or heart problems. You are in the higher risk category if you have a waist measurement of more than 37 inches for a man or 32 inches for a woman.

How can I improve my health and reduce my risk?

Eat healthily. Have smaller portions of carbohydrates (bread, pasta, rice) and substitute with larger amounts of vegetables. Call in to us in Brennan’s Life Pharmacy for your free food pyramid leaflet which shows the recommended amounts of different food groups.

Get more active. Everyone should get at least 150 minutes a week of moderate to energetic exercise, split over at least three days.

How do I know if I am diabetic ?

We can screen for diabetes in Brennan’s Life Pharmacy by checking your blood glucose levels. Ask us in store, or phone for an appointment.
