Menopause

What is Menopause?

Menopause is a natural stage in life that marks the end of your monthly periods. It happens when your ovaries stop producing certain hormones — mainly oestrogen and progesterone. Most women reach menopause between the ages of 45 and 55, but it can happen earlier.

You’re officially considered to have reached menopause when you haven’t had a period for 12 months in a row.

What is Perimenopause?

Perimenopause is the time leading up to menopause when your hormones begin to fluctuate. During this phase, your periods may become irregular, and you may begin to notice symptoms such as hot flushes or mood changes. This transition can last a few years and varies from person to person.

Common Symptoms

Everyone experiences menopause differently. Some people notice very few changes, while others find this time more challenging.

Symptoms can include:

  • Hot flushes or night sweats
  • Difficulty sleeping or staying asleep
  • Mood swings, anxiety, or low mood
  • Brain fog or trouble concentrating
  • Changes in your menstrual cycle
  • Vaginal dryness or discomfort
  • Needing to urinate more often
  • Low energy or feeling tired

If these symptoms are affecting your daily life, support is available.

What Can Help?

1. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

HRT is the most effective treatment for menopause symptoms. It works by replacing the hormones your body is no longer producing. HRT is available in several forms — including patches, tablets, gels and sprays — and your doctor or pharmacist can help find the right option for you.

2. Other Supports

If HRT isn’t suitable for you, other treatments and supports are available:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can help with low mood and anxiety.
  • Moisturisers and lubricants can help with vaginal dryness.
  • Your pharmacist can advise you on non-prescription supports too.

3. Healthy Lifestyle Tips

  • Eat a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D
  • Keep active with regular weight-bearing exercise
  • Reduce alcohol and caffeine to help with hot flushes
  • Try stress-reducing techniques like yoga or meditation
  • Keep your bedroom cool and stick to a regular bedtime

Vitamins That May Support Menopause Symptoms

While HRT remains the most effective treatment, some vitamins and supplements may help support your health and manage certain symptoms during menopause.

Always speak to your pharmacist before starting any new supplements.

Recommended Nutrients:

  • Vitamin D – Supports bone health and immune function. Especially important in Ireland due to low sun exposure.
  • Calcium – Helps protect bones and reduces the risk of osteoporosis.
  • Vitamin B6 – May support mood and reduce irritability.
  • Vitamin B12 – Boosts energy levels and supports brain and nerve health.
  • Magnesium – Can aid sleep, support muscle function and reduce anxiety.
  • Omega-3 (Fish or Algal Oil) – Anti-inflammatory and may support heart health and brain function.
  • Phytoestrogens (Soy Isoflavones, Red Clover) – Plant-based compounds that may ease hot flushes for some women.

Our pharmacists can help you choose supplements that match your needs and check for any possible interactions with medicines or HRT.

Early or Premature Menopause

Some people experience menopause before the age of 45 (early menopause) or before 40 (premature menopause), which may be due to medical treatments, surgery, or natural causes. If this happens, it's important to seek medical advice, as early menopause may affect long-term health such as bone strength and heart health.

Free HRT Scheme – Starting 1st June 2025

From 1st June 2025, HRT will be available free of charge to all women in Ireland, under a new government scheme.

We’re proud to confirm that all of our pharmacies will be participating in the scheme from day one.

This means:

  • You can collect your prescribed HRT products at no cost
  • The scheme is open to all women, regardless of age
  • A wide range of commonly used HRT options are included (patches, gels, sprays, and tablets)

This is a major step forward for women’s health in Ireland, removing the cost barrier to menopause treatment and encouraging open conversations about hormone health and wellbeing.

If you’d like to know more, speak to your pharmacist — we’re here to help you understand your options and support you every step of the way.
